Westview Health Care Center residents, patients and staff know that spring is officially here with summer right around the corner when the artists from Sandtasia, a Rhode Island-based professional sand sculpting company appear on the facility’s front lawn to create their newest masterpiece.
Owner, Steve Topazio and his sister Jessica DiCostanzo worked through rain or shine over the duration of 3 days to carve out this year’s woodland motif creation that features a multi-faced tree stump adorned with multiple smiling gnomes. When the sun was shining Westview residents watched the artists working diligently from the facility patio, admiring the mystical characters manifest from a 7 ton mound of sand.
Topazio, a retired construction manager turned professional sculptor, is commissioned by several local businesses and organizations, including the Woodstock Fair and Brooklyn Fair, to adorn their property with his company’s unique sand creations. One would think that the sculptures would only last through a few rainy days but the secret of their sculpture’s longevity lies in the process of properly compacting the sand called the “pound up” and spraying a water and wood glue mixture to the finished work.
“Every project is fun. Every project is different,” remarked Topazio. “I enjoy talking to the people who are intrigued to see the process unfold and answering their questions. I carve for the people.”
“This is Sandtasia’s fifth year at Westview,” stated David T. Panteleakos, Administrator. “Each year they bring something creatively new for us to admire through the upcoming summer months.”
Westview Health Care Center is a 103-bed skilled nursing inpatient facility, which includes a distinct and self-contained 28-bed subacute short-term rehabilitation unit and an Outpatient Rehabilitation and Aquatic Center, both dedicated to providing quality health care services.
